Like a scene, the wallpaper acts as a backdrop for an installation of sculptural clothing/textile works that await/linger after their role as costumes for the performance entitled "Independance/Dependance."

When creating these backgrounds, it's not so much that I look to install a scene as though a theater, but a reference of atmosphere, a hosting space that recalls the fact that this in fact a place and that exchange, either here or there, is an inevitable performace. The wall closes a space, containing and contextualizeing; the wall reminds of us other places.

Continuing my fascination with a found pedagogical book from the 1970s, entitled 'Developing as a Person,' I wanted to touch upon the questions and discussions around individuality that arose during that time period. Thinking about how modes of expression led us to self-discovery and pluri-identities, I look to question how an empowered society led to an over-empowered capitalist society. How the breakdown/breakthrough of roles within a system has developed alongside a breakdown of structure, thus a sort of floating individual.
As the institution becomes less stable, the individual's role in society is less about being productive-when-in-labor, as the identity of the self grows more and more relavant, more and more important, 'You' becomes the productive value. If who you are, your 'SELF' is the site of production, the role of being independent becomes less clear. What are we defining? At a certain point independence seems to be dependence...

As an act of remembering and of tracing this turning point away from the with-others, from community and towards personal power and expression, this performance also envisions the macro and micro of relationship dynamics.
